I need a tagging strategy…

Tuesday, June 17th, 2008

Now that I have my WordPress blog up-to-date, and now that I have a template that supports tags, it’s time to go back and tag all my posts.  The problem is that I’m not sure what the “best practice” is for tagging posts.  Here are some of my questions:

  • How many tags per post?  I’m guess there is no magic number.
  • Does every post need a tag?
  • Do I still need categories if I’m using tags?
  • What about capitalization with tags?
  • What about tags that are two words, like “Aggie basketball” or “movie review”?

The most pressing questions I have are related to tags that have words that should be capitalizied and tags that have more then one word.  First the capitalization question…  And combining it with my two word question, how would you handle a name?  Take my name, would you add two tags, one for Erik and one for Weibust?  Would you capitalize them?

And more on the two word tags…  Would you tag Erik Weibust as the two word tag, Erik Weibust, and then add a tag for Erik, and a tag for Weibust?

Why the heck am I using tags?  Please, somebody tell me…

M. Night Shyamalan is totally out of ideas…

Friday, June 13th, 2008

If the title of my post doesn’t give you an idea where this is going, let me be clear…  I just saw the new M. Night Shyamalan movie, The Happening.  IT SUCKED!  My five year old, Noah, could come up with a better, scarier, more interesting movie.  The scary parts stunk.  The attempts at humor were dumb.  The bad guy, the plants, are the least scary “bad guy” ever!

Oh dear how I feel ripped-off.  M. Night Shyamalan, YOU OWE ME $8.75!!!

Cygwin Question…

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Do you use Cygwin?  I do.  I love it.  If you’re stuck using windows, IMO, Cygwin is a must install app.

Anyhow, the point of this post is why doesn’t cygwin have a clear command?  Am I missing something?  I just ran setup and looked through the full list, twice, and didn’t see a clear to install.  Is there something about clear that is so complicated it can’t be implemented in cygwin?  I kind of assumed it was a dumb-simple command.

Hmm…

Testing WordPress Tags…

Sunday, June 8th, 2008

I have recently, last Friday, updated my blog.  I’m trying to utilize the tagging features that have been recently added to WordPress.  For some reason the tags aren’t showing up in my theme.  WTF?

I Just Beat Guitar Hero 3…

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

I feel like a Guitar Legend….  That was tough…

Here are some of my opinions on the music…

Favorite Song: My name is Jonas

Hardest Song: Raining Blood

Best Surprise: She Bangs the Drums

I gotta say I had a blast playing GH3, but after playing Rock Band at a friend’s house a couple weeks ago…  I’m selling my GH3 and buying Rock Band as soon as it comes out for the Wii.

I saw the new Indiana Jones movie last night… NO SPOILER HERE

Friday, May 23rd, 2008

I went and saw the new Indiana Jones movie last night, and I hate to say it, but the best thing I can say about the movie was it was ok.  I can’t even get myself to type it was good; I’m sticking with it was, ok.

I think the problem with these legendary trilogies (Star Wars, Indiana Jones, etc) is they wait *way* too long between movies.  I don’t know if the problem is it’s hard to pick up after so long away.  Or, if there has just been too much technological advancement in movies and the old movies don’t seem right with all the new “stuff”.

Anyhow, go see Indy, don’t let my opinion keep you away.  It’s still cool to see Harrison Ford on the screen playing Indy, and there are some familiar faces in the movie that make it fun.  I’ll wait a few days, and then update this post with my favorite parts of the movie.  That way I don’t spoil it for anyone.

Keith Donald Delivers Great Spring Web Products Talk…

Thursday, May 22nd, 2008

Last night the Spring Dallas User Group was lucky enough to convince Keith Donald to fly up and talk to us about the Spring Web products (Spring MVC, Spring Web Flow, Spring JavaScript, and Spring Faces). A large chunk of Keith’s talk was on annotation-based Spring MVC along with the Spring JavaScript product. Both looked great! Between Keith’s talk last night and Craig Walls’ talk last month, I think I’m ready start doing all my Spring MVC development via annotations.

Of course, I’ll need to spend some time getting up-to-speed on all the convention over configuration rules that are available. Thank God, that the SpringFramework has top-notch documentation, or I wouldn’t be able to figure out all the convention rules/options. (That was one of my main mental roadblocks that kept me away until now)

Keith also spent some time last night showing off Spring Web Flow, which is a great DSL for defining stateful web flows inside a Spring MVC webapp. Keith wrapped up with a very quick demo of Spring Faces. I’m sure JSF people will find value in that product, but I’ll stay with Spring MVC.

Keith’s talk was based on the samples that go with the new Spring Web Flow 2 release.

I’m Still Here…

Monday, May 12th, 2008

I’ve just been crazy busy.  It’s not much of an excuse for leaving this blog unattended, but here is what I’ve been up to the last couple weeks.

  1. Tonight was some Nintendo Wii with the boys and then some Guitar Hero 3 for me.
  2. Sunday was Mother’s Day, if this is new to you, don’t bother, you’re too late.
  3. Work, work, work…
  4. Dallas TechFest!  It was awesome and deserves its own post (and will get one, soon)
  5. Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University (definitely will get its own post)

So look for a number of posts related to the items above, some album reviews, and tons of pics coming.

I just bought a Nintendo Wii

Friday, May 2nd, 2008

Yup, I just bought a Nintendo Wii! I also bought the Wii Play (so I could get a 2nd controller, and for my first game purchase I bought Guitar Hero 3. Other then having to run TechFest on Saturday, this weekend will be consumed by the Wii. I think I’ll impose some rule where Daddy plays twice, then Noah, then Zach, then Mommy, then Daddy again twice. :)

Anybody want to recommend any games or accessories? I’m pretty certain my next purchase will be MarioKart, but after that I’m looking for suggestions.

Thank You Hillary Clinton…

Tuesday, April 22nd, 2008

Special thanks to Hillary Clinton…  Your win tonight in Pennsylvania has continued to splinter the Democrats.  The longer you and Barack duke it out…  the better off the Republicans are.  So keep it up.  You guys keep screwing your party.
